Endpoint Hardening
Endpoint hardening is the process of securing individual devices and systems by reducing their attack surface and vulnerabilities.
This cybersecurity practice involves implementing multiple security measures to make endpoints—such as computers, mobile devices, servers, and IoT devices—more resistant to cyberattacks and unauthorized access.
Common endpoint hardening techniques include disabling unnecessary services and ports, removing or disabling unused software applications, applying security patches and updates regularly, configuring strong authentication mechanisms, and implementing access controls. Additional measures often involve encrypting data at rest and in transit, installing and configuring endpoint protection software, enabling firewalls, and establishing secure configuration baselines.
The goal is to minimize potential entry points that attackers could exploit while ensuring that legitimate users can still access necessary resources and functionality. Endpoint hardening is particularly critical in today's distributed work environments where devices may connect from various locations and networks, potentially exposing organizations to increased security risks.
