Overview: Continuous Access Evaluation (CAE)

Quick Definition

Continuous Access Evaluation is a security model that dynamically reassesses user access permissions throughout an active session. Unlike traditional authentication that only verifies identity at login, continuous access evaluation monitors ongoing activities and environmental factors to determine whether a user should maintain their current level of access to resources.

This approach evaluates factors such as user location, device security posture, behavioral patterns, risk indicators, and real-time threat intelligence. When conditions change—such as detecting unusual behavior, a compromised device, or a shift in risk level—the system can automatically revoke access, step down privileges, or require additional authentication without waiting for the session to expire.

Continuous access evaluation is particularly valuable in cloud environments and zero-trust architectures, where access decisions must adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. Major cloud providers like Microsoft and Google have implemented versions of this technology in their identity platforms, enabling organizations to respond immediately to security events rather than relying solely on periodic re-authentication or static access controls.
