Overview: Cryptography

Quick Definition

Cryptography is the practice of securing information by transforming it into formats that unauthorized parties cannot easily read or understand. This field encompasses the mathematical techniques, algorithms, and protocols used to protect data confidentiality, ensure data integrity, verify authenticity, and enable secure communication across potentially insecure channels.

Modern cryptography relies on complex mathematical algorithms that use keys—secret values that control the encryption and decryption processes. Symmetric cryptography uses the same key for both encryption and decryption, while asymmetric cryptography employs pairs of mathematically related keys: one public and one private. Hash functions, another cryptographic tool, create unique digital fingerprints of data to verify integrity.

Cryptography forms the foundation of virtually all cybersecurity measures, from securing online banking transactions and protecting stored passwords to enabling secure email communication and verifying software authenticity. Common cryptographic applications include SSL/TLS certificates that secure web browsing, digital signatures that verify document authenticity, and encryption algorithms that protect sensitive data both in transit and at rest.

As quantum computing advances, cryptography continues evolving to address new threats, with post-quantum cryptographic algorithms being developed to resist attacks from quantum computers that could potentially break current encryption methods.
