Overview: Multi-Tenancy

Quick Definition

Multi-tenancy is a software architecture where a single application instance serves multiple customers or organizations simultaneously. In this model, each customer (or "tenant") shares the same underlying infrastructure, application code, and database while maintaining logical separation and isolation of their data and configurations.

Multi-tenancy is commonly used in cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platforms to achieve cost efficiency and scalability. Rather than deploying separate application instances for each customer, providers can serve hundreds or thousands of tenants from a shared infrastructure, significantly reducing operational costs and resource requirements.

From a cybersecurity perspective, multi-tenancy presents unique challenges. Proper tenant isolation is critical to prevent data leakage between customers, unauthorized access to another tenant's information, or privilege escalation attacks. Security measures must include robust access controls, data encryption, network segmentation, and careful application design to ensure that vulnerabilities in one tenant's environment cannot compromise others.

Multi-tenant architectures require additional security considerations compared to single-tenant deployments, including comprehensive logging and monitoring to track tenant-specific activities, secure APIs for tenant management, and incident response procedures that can isolate and remediate issues without affecting other tenants.
