A Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) is a comprehensive inventory listing all software components, libraries, and dependencies within an application or system. Much like a traditional bill of materials used in manufacturing, an SBOM provides transparency into what third-party and open-source components are included in a software product, along with their versions, licensing information, and known vulnerabilities.

SBOMs have become increasingly critical for cybersecurity as modern software applications typically incorporate numerous external libraries and frameworks. When security vulnerabilities are discovered in popular open-source components—such as the Log4j vulnerability in 2021—organizations with detailed SBOMs can quickly identify which of their applications are affected and prioritize remediation efforts accordingly.

The format and depth of SBOMs can vary, but they typically include component names, version numbers, supplier information, dependency relationships, and cryptographic hashes for verification. Industry standards like SPDX (Software Package Data Exchange) and CycloneDX provide standardized formats for SBOM creation and sharing.

Government initiatives, including executive orders in the United States, increasingly require SBOMs from software vendors, particularly for critical infrastructure applications. This regulatory push reflects growing recognition that software supply chain security requires visibility into all components that comprise modern applications.
