How We Got Here
In the early 2000s, a small team of researchers at the University of Victoria discovered a novel technique for biometric identity verification.
Unlike traditional forms of biometric identification, this technique didn’t rely detailed measurements of the shapes and sizes of body parts like fingertips, facial bones, retinal tissue.
Instead, it used new machine learning technologies to identify users based on tiny yet entirely individual patterns in everyday movements.
This breakthrough provided distinctive, radical benefits over traditional biometric technologies.
Because it didn’t measure bodies and couldn’t ever be traced back to a name and biography, it wasn’t invasive of personal privacy. And the movement data that it analyzed was far harder than a fingerprint to steal or impersonate.
Even better, by observing motion over time, it could silently, continuously confirm identity.
The team applied this “behavioral-biometric” science to the movements involved in computer use—mouse and keyboard activity to start—and a new, advanced form authentication for computing systems was born.
Patents were applied for and received, a company was spun out of the research lab, U.S. and Canadian defense contracts were signed, and the product was brought to market.
The name of the new company? You guessed it: Plurilock.
