Overview: Continuous Identity Assurance

Quick Definition

A Continuous Identity Assurance system is a security framework that continuously validates user identity throughout an entire computing session rather than just at login. Unlike traditional authentication methods that verify identity only once at the beginning of a session, continuous identity assurance monitors user behavior, biometrics, and other identifying characteristics throughout the entire duration of system access.

This approach addresses the fundamental weakness of point-in-time authentication: the assumption that the authenticated user remains the same person for the entire session. Continuous identity assurance systems typically employ behavioral biometrics, such as typing patterns, mouse movements, and interaction rhythms, along with environmental factors like device characteristics and network location to create an ongoing confidence score about user identity.

When the system detects anomalies or behaviors inconsistent with the authenticated user's established patterns, it can trigger additional verification steps, reduce access privileges, or terminate the session entirely. This technology is particularly valuable in preventing account takeover attacks, insider threats, and unauthorized access that occurs after initial authentication, providing organizations with granular, real-time visibility into whether the person using an account is truly the intended user.
