Overview: Secure Web Gateway (SWG)

Quick Definition

A Secure Web Gateway is a cybersecurity solution that filters and monitors web traffic between users and the internet to block malicious content and enforce security policies. These gateways typically operate as either on-premises appliances, cloud-based services, or hybrid deployments that inspect all web communications in real-time.

Secure Web Gateways provide multiple layers of protection including URL filtering to block access to known malicious or inappropriate websites, malware detection and prevention, data loss prevention (DLP) capabilities to prevent sensitive information from leaving the organization, and SSL/TLS inspection to examine encrypted traffic for threats. They also enforce acceptable use policies by controlling which websites and web applications users can access based on categories, time of day, or user roles.

Modern Secure Web Gateways often integrate with cloud access security brokers (CASBs) and zero trust network access (ZTNA) solutions to provide comprehensive web security. They play a crucial role in protecting organizations from web-based threats such as phishing attacks, malware downloads, command and control communications, and data exfiltration attempts while maintaining visibility into user web activity and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
