Secure Web Gateways provide multiple layers of protection including URL filtering to block access to known malicious or inappropriate websites, malware detection and prevention, data loss prevention (DLP) capabilities to prevent sensitive information from leaving the organization, and SSL/TLS inspection to examine encrypted traffic for threats. They also enforce acceptable use policies by controlling which websites and web applications users can access based on categories, time of day, or user roles.

Modern Secure Web Gateways often integrate with cloud access security brokers (CASBs) and zero trust network access (ZTNA) solutions to provide comprehensive web security.
