A Defense-in-Depth strategy is a cybersecurity approach that employs multiple layers of security controls to protect information systems.

Rather than relying on a single security measure, this methodology creates overlapping defensive mechanisms that work together to prevent, detect, and respond to cyber threats.

The concept originated in military strategy, where forces would establish multiple defensive positions to slow and weaken attackers. In cybersecurity, these layers typically include physical security, network security, endpoint protection, access controls, data encryption, monitoring systems, and user training. Each layer addresses different types of threats and attack vectors.

Defense-in-Depth operates on the principle that if one security control fails, additional layers will continue to protect critical assets. For example, if an attacker bypasses a firewall, they might still be stopped by intrusion detection systems, endpoint security software, or access control mechanisms.

This approach is particularly effective because modern cyber threats are sophisticated and multi-faceted. Advanced persistent threats, for instance, often involve multiple attack stages that different security layers can address. While implementing Defense-in-Depth requires significant investment in various security technologies and processes, it provides comprehensive protection that single-point solutions cannot match, making it a cornerstone of enterprise cybersecurity strategies.
