What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence—AI—encompasses a family of computing techniques that allow machines to perform tasks we'd normally associate with human thinking.

The core idea is pattern recognition at scale: systems that can analyze massive amounts of data, identify relationships within it, and make decisions or predictions based on what they've learned. Modern AI systems, especially those using neural networks, don't follow rigid if-then rules. Instead, they develop their own internal models by processing examples, much like how you might learn to recognize a friend's face without consciously listing their features.

In cybersecurity, AI has become both a powerful tool and a significant concern. On the defensive side, AI excels at spotting anomalies—unusual login times, strange data access patterns, or subtle indicators of compromise that would be nearly impossible for humans to catch in enterprise-scale environments. Security teams use AI to sift through billions of events and surface the handful that actually matter. But AI also introduces new vulnerabilities. Large language models like ChatGPT can leak sensitive information if employees feed them confidential data. AI systems themselves can be fooled through adversarial techniques or prompt injection attacks. The technology that helps defend networks has also become another attack surface that needs protection.

Origin

The term "artificial intelligence" was coined at a 1956 conference at Dartmouth College, where researchers gathered to explore whether machines could simulate human intelligence. Early AI research focused on symbolic reasoning and expert systems—programs loaded with explicit rules about how to solve specific problems. These systems had some success in narrow domains but couldn't adapt or learn on their own.

The field went through cycles of excitement and disappointment (the so-called "AI winters") until the 2010s, when improvements in computing power, the availability of massive datasets, and breakthroughs in neural network design converged. Deep learning—a technique using layered neural networks—suddenly made AI practical for real-world applications like image recognition, natural language processing, and decision-making under uncertainty.

In cybersecurity specifically, AI techniques started appearing in the late 1990s and early 2000s for intrusion detection, but they were often too prone to false positives to be useful. The modern wave of AI-powered security tools really took off around 2015, as machine learning became sophisticated enough to distinguish actual threats from normal network noise. The release of ChatGPT in late 2022 marked another inflection point, forcing security teams to grapple with AI not just as a defensive tool but as a potential vector for data leaks and social engineering attacks.

Why It Matters

The volume and complexity of modern cyber threats have outpaced what human analysts can handle manually. AI matters because it's one of the few ways to achieve security at scale. A single enterprise network might generate millions of log events per day. AI systems can process all of that, learn what "normal" looks like for each user and system, and flag the deviations that might indicate a breach in progress. This isn't theoretical—attackers are already inside many networks, moving laterally for weeks or months before being detected. AI-driven behavior analytics can compress that dwell time significantly.

At the same time, the widespread adoption of generative AI tools has created new risks. Employees using ChatGPT or similar services might inadvertently paste sensitive code, customer data, or strategic information into these systems, where it could be stored, learned from, or exposed. Attackers are also using AI to write more convincing phishing emails, generate malicious code, and automate reconnaissance at scale.

The result is a cybersecurity landscape where AI is essential for defense but also introduces novel attack surfaces. Organizations need strategies for both leveraging AI's defensive capabilities and controlling the risks it brings—through prompt injection defenses, data loss prevention for AI interfaces, and rigorous testing of AI-powered security tools themselves.
